It is one of the original counties of the state and was formed out of a portion of the colonial Parish of St. Paul. It is the parent county to: Columbia, Glascock, McDuffie and part of Warren Counties. It lies on the eastern side of the state boarding the Savannah River and just across from Edgefield County, South Carolina.
