Franklin County was created in 1784 and was considered the 8th county of the state. It is located in the northeastern portion of the state boarding South Carolina along the Savannah River. The Superior Courts kept records of divorce, civil and criminal cases, naturalization, military discharges, homesteads, grand juries, registration of land deeds and prisons. Occasionally, superior courts (as well as inferior courts), kept records pertaining to slaves. Depending on the case, both jurisdictions should be checked for information about slaves and their owners.
