Counties formed from the creek and Cherokee Cessions of the 1830’s: Barbour, Benton, Chamber, Cherokee, Coosa, Dekalb, Macon, Marshall, Randolph, Russell, Talladega, and Tallapoosa. The 1840 census was the first to be taken of the population in these new counties. Only head of household were actually named in addition to those who were military pensioners. The index mentions approximately 4,000 persons.
