Colonial North Carolina Tax Lists, 1679, 1693-1694, 1703-1720, and 1753-1754

Most of the lists are on single sheets. Longer lists are on several sheets which are sewed together. A list of the sheets follows in the table of contents. Some lists are for poll (or head) tax, and some are for tax on land. At the end are lists of taxes paid in bushels of corn (one bushel per poll). Persons paying a fraction of a poll evidently owned a fraction of a slave. Some slave names appear, but many do not. Some Indians are also taxed. Cobeing covered in this book: Chowan, Beaufort, Bertie, Craven, Currituck, Granville, Hyde, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, and Tyrrell with an index that mentions approximately 9,300 persons in 23,129 entries.
