It sits the northeastern portion of the state while be surrounded by the Albemarle Sound and the counties of: Bertie, Hertford, Gates and Perquimans. St. Paul’s Parish adjoined the Upper Parish of Nansemond County, VA. After the NC/VA boundary was set in 1782, Chowan County acquired the former Nansemond County lands now lying in Gates County, NC. Chowan County was originally a large source of early migration into the Colony of NC. Chowan County is the parent county to: Gates, Hertford and Tyrell. These lists of taxable people contain the names of head of household of farms or the overseer where there was no master or mistress of the farm, names of white servants, names of wives and children, names of free mullattoes, and the names of both negro males and females. These records can act like a mid-year census helping the genealogists trace a person or family when and where they lived and owned land. The Index to this book mentions approximately 4,000 persons.
